Founded on 14 March 1903, its name comes from the anagram MEXI-co and CALI-fornia, which in an inverse way also generated the name of Calexico, access door to the state of California and frontier with Mexicali.
Mexicali is a sister city of Calexico, California, which lies directly across the international border, as each city's name combines California and Mexico.
Mexicali recently held the Centennial celebrations, where BajaProg 2003 played an essential role.
